Chaotic

English version

So, the instruction was to check in as in-patient at St Gorans hospital. Then my doctor called again. He explained that ward 33 was pretty full, and they had some staffing problem, especially over the weekend. So, I should go to Karolinska in Hudding for my 5-day chemo session. That had been ok, if it was not for the fact that it is quite far away, and going home over night is not really feasible. An hour later they called me from Karolinska in Solna, and told me that they had changed again. Now I would get my 5-day chemo session as an out-patient in Solna. Well, it sounded great. It meant that I only had to be there between 11 am to 3 pm every day.
Now I only had to solve the problem that I also needed to be at the diabetes ward on Thursday. That was fixed with a couple phone calls. There is a slight problem with my insulin, as the chemo-sessions also include large doses of cortisone. They told me I just needed to increase the insuline for that.

Karolinska hospital is muuuch bigger than St. Gorans hospital. The day-ward at the medicine clinic at St Gorans can take 4 patients, where Karolinska can take at least 24.
When I got there they had already decided that I should not have the cortisone, but on the other hand, my chemo was mixed in glucose rather than the usual salt-water. But I guessed it should work.

I have an appointment on Monday to get a Port-a-Cath, but now they started talking about getting it done earlier, so it would be easier to handle this chemo-session.

At 12, it was time for lunch, and one of the nurses went to get my lunch. I took the insulin (including the extra dose). Then she came back with another nurse and they told me I would not get any lunch as I was planned for surgery in the afternoon and was not allowed to eat. Well, at least I had a banana at 11 am.

At 1.30 pm, I am on my way to surgery. At last I will get a Port-A-Cath and not have to have all these needles anymore. When I tell them about the banana, they do not look too happy. You are recommended not eat for at least 6 hours prior to surgery, and the absolutely not within 4 hours prior to surgery. So, I will only get local anesthetic (painkiller) but nothing to make me calm or sleepy. I guess that the painkiller part is the most important. Never bothered about the other stuff before so.

So, they start trying to get the catheter in place. The surgeon thinks she can find a good blood vessel on the same side of my chest as the previous surgeon in St Goran. After a while she is not that positive (or should I say, self-confident). It is much trickier than she thought, so she brings in another surgeon.

At 4 pm the surgery is finished. I got a new scar but no Port-a-Cath. They had prepared for cutting on my left side as well, but as they had already given me the maximum dosage of Xylocain (yes, I whine as soon as I think there might be a possible chance that I could feel some sort of pain). But they will try again on Friday possibly.
And of course, today’s surgery also means that I need to stay the night in hospital.

Now I am back in the ward. My blood sugar is at all-time low. I guess if it goes down any further I will have to ask for a box of bonbons or something
Nu är jag körd tillbaka till avdelningen. Blodsockret är på all-time low.

If St Gorans ward 33 is a 2-star ward, the one in Karolinska is 4-star. Here I get a single room (no king-size bed nor a minibar, but room service is quite ok), tv in the room and a 54 Mbit WLAN.

Still, there is some hope that I will be able to go home tomorrow evening. The question is only with how many new scars.
